How to Send IELTS Scores to Universities

    Send IELTS Scores to Universities

If you've already taken the IELTS and are ready to apply to universities abroad, then there's one crucial step you can't skip!

Well, sending your scores to the dream universities has to be the one!

But how exactly does it work? Can you send scores to multiple universities at once? And what if you’ve already taken the test but didn’t select any institutions then?

In this blog, we’ll explain how you can send your IELTS scores to the universities you plan to apply to. Whether you're taking the test with IDP or the British Council and whether you're sending them electronically or by post, we've got you covered!

Proof You Have the Right Score

Pro Tip: Recheck and re-evaluate everything when you send it across to the universities. Be it your application, score, or documents. EVERYTHING!

By proof, that's exactly what we mean!

While IELTS is a well-recognized exam that helps you send your scores directly to the relevant universities, it is always best to first check if your scores meet the university's criteria and to review the acceptance rates of your chosen institutions.

Here's a list of things you must check before taking the final leap!

    1. Before applying, make sure you are aware of the minimum IELTS scores that each university asks of its applicants.

    2. The IELTS results follow!

    3. Check if the score is ranged within 1.0 to 9.0 as each band represents a different degree of English language competency.

Next, you have to send official proof of your IELTS results to demonstrate your eligibility after verifying the above criteria, and you will receive a Test Report Form (TRF) or electronic Test Report Form (eTRF) that will serve as this "proof".

What is IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)?

The IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is an official report card that confirms your IELTS result on paper.

This TRF report is valid for 2 years from the date of the result, which is usually mentioned on the report itself.

For example, if you receive the result on May 25, 2025, your TRF report is valid and can be used until May 25, 2027. After this period, you will have to retake your IELTS exam if required for any related documentation.

Your IELTS TRF report contains the following details:

    • Test Type: Academic or General Training

    • Centre Number

    • Date of Test

    • Candidate Number

    • Candidate Details such as Family Name, First Name, and Candidate ID

    • Personal Details such as Date of Birth, Gender, Scheme Code, Country, and First Language

    • Test Results: TRF will contain your individual IELTS scores on the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections, along with your Overall Band Score and the corresponding CEFR level.

    • IELTS TRF Number: Mentioned at the bottom right corner

Further, to collect your TRF report, you will most likely have to visit the test center or receive it via post. In India, you will receive one physical copy of your Test Report Form (TRF) delivered to your registered address at no additional cost and can send your scores to five universities within one month of the exam date. The institutions will receive these scores via e-mail, regular posts, courier, or overseas postage.

After that, any Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) will incur an administrative charge of INR 250 per university if sent electronically. For physical requests, candidates will need to pay an additional courier fee of INR 1500.

Now, we are all covered. It's time to send the scores!

How to Send Your IELTS Scores to Universities?

You can send your scores to the five selected universities either by post or electronically.

Most universities require an original copy of your IELTS TRF report. However, it is advisable to confirm each university's preferred method of receiving IELTS scores, as some may accept electronic submissions, potentially saving time and costs.

Send Your IELTS Score to Universities by Post

To send your IELTS scores to universities by post, you'll need to request Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) to be mailed directly to the institutions. To request this service, enter the relevant university addresses on your portal while registering for IELTS. You can send up to five additional copies of your TRF directly to the universities you are applying to at no cost.

The processing times for ATRF requests are typically 7 to 10 working days from the date of payment. Hence, it is advisable to plan accordingly.

Send Your IELTS Score to Universities Electronically

To send your IELTS scores to universities electronically, you must go to the portal and look for the section designated for score submissions. Add the information for your selected universities and choose the option for electronic delivery. After entering the required details, submit your request. IELTS will then transmit your electronic Test Report Form (eTRF) directly to the universities you've specified.

    Easy!

You can send up to ten electronic score reports to accepted universities at no cost.

If you possess an eTRF, you can also email it directly to the universities to which you are applying. There is no limit on how frequently you can do this as long as your eTRF is dated within the last two years.

In some cases, a university may accept a scanned version of your (paper) Test Report Form. If so, you can scan the document and submit it as a PDF.

How to Send IELTS Scores to Universities: Additional TRFs (ATRF)

As mentioned already, for electronic submissions, the first five reports are complimentary when you register for the test. For any additional score report, you will have to incur a charge of INR 250 per university. If you opt for a physical copy, the cost for courier service is INR 1,500 per university and includes tracking information. If sending via standard post, it will cost INR 400 per university without any delivery tracking service.

As of February 1, 2020, IDP has transitioned to accepting only online applications for ATRFs, so requests made in person are no longer accepted.

To submit your application, log into the official IELTS website, choose the “Add TRF” option, and fill in the necessary information, including the name of the university you wish to send your scores to. You have the option for either electronic or physical delivery.

    IELTS TRF Download Procedure

The IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is now an eTRF and can be downloaded online. The following steps will help you download your eTRF:

    • Step 1: Visit: https://www.ieltsidpindia.com/
    • Step 2: Go to the Login Tab and then to Candidate Login
    • Step 3: Once you log in, you will see an auto pop-up that will provide you with information about your IELTS score.
    • Step 4: You can download the Result Feedback as a PDF
    • Step 5: Once you click on ‘Close’, you can scroll down and click on ‘View eTRF’ under the Declared Result column
    • Step 6: From there, you can directly print or download the eTRF

How Long Does It Take To Send IELTS Scores To Universities?

Sending IELTS results online to colleges typically takes around 5 business days, whereas delivering a hard copy scorecard to universities may take between 5 to 10 business days.

Always use a TRF (Test Report Form) to send your scores to universities, which is a copy of your IELTS result or scorecard. You can receive your TRF within 13 days of the IELTS exam date

Just in case you wish to pick up your TRF from your nearest IDP IELTS office after the results are released, you are required to bring your identity proof that was used throughout the IELTS registration process.

How Much Does It Cost To Send IELTS Scores?

You can send your IELTS scores to up to five universities for FREE.

If you want to send them to more than five universities, you'll need to pay ₹250 (around $3.75) per university.

Furthermore, this fee applies if you desire to physically mail your scores to your preferred universities. If you want to request more TRFs, you can also submit a document known as an application for the provision of further TRFs. You will be charged a fee for each ATRF application.
