Why Do B-Schools Use GMAT?
Business schools use the GMAT scores as it provides a consistent benchmark to compare applicants from different academic backgrounds and countries on the same scale. A single GMAT score can be used to apply to multiple programs simultaneously and remains valid for five years.
- Evaluates Core Academic Skills: The exam tests your quantitative ability, verbal reasoning, and data insights skills, which you will use throughout your MBA to analyse case studies, interpret business data, and develop logical arguments.
- Provides a Standardised Benchmark: Business schools use the GMAT to compare applicants from different countries, academic backgrounds, and professional experience on the same scoring scale, making admissions decisions more consistent and fair.
- Accepted by Universities Worldwide: You can use a single GMAT score to apply to multiple MBA, MiM, and other business master's programmes at universities across the world.
- Saves Time and Application Costs: At the time of your exam, you can send your official GMAT score report to up to five programmes at no additional cost. For example, if you apply to INSEAD and London Business School for an MBA, you can use the same GMAT score instead of taking separate entrance exams.

GMAT 2026: Latest Updates
- Current GMAT Format: The GMAT Focus Edition is now the only version of the exam, having fully replaced the previous GMAT format in February 2024.
- No Lifetime Attempt Limit: GMAC removed the previous 8-attempt lifetime cap in October 2024, allowing you to take the GMAT as many times as needed.
- GMAT Superscoring: From August 2026, you will be able to see and send GMAT Superscores to highlight your highest individual section scores across previous exams.
GMAT Exam Pattern 2026
The GMAT Focus Edition tests you across three equally weighted sections for a duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes, excluding one optional 10-minute break. The Data Insights section has replaced the older Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning sections.
Here’s how the GMAT exam is structured:
|
Section |
Number of Questions |
Duration |
What It Evaluates |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Quantitative Reasoning |
21 |
45 minutes |
Arithmetic and algebra-based problem-solving |
|
Verbal Reasoning |
23 |
45 minutes |
Reading comprehension and critical reasoning |
|
Data Insights |
20 |
45 minutes |
Data sufficiency, table analysis, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis, multi-source reasoning |
GMAT Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are computer-adaptive. The test adjusts question difficulty based on whether you answer correctly, so the questions you see depend on your real-time performance.
You also get to choose the order in which you attempt the three sections at the start of the GMAT test. You can mark up to 3 questions for review within each section before moving on.
GMAT Exam Syllabus 2026
The GMAT syllabus evaluates logical reasoning, critical thinking, and data literacy rather than memorisation or advanced mathematics.
Here are three key skills GMAC tests in each section:
Quantitative Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning tests arithmetic, algebra, and word problems that simulate business decision-making. Geometry has been removed from this section, so your preparation should focus on number properties, ratios, percentages, and algebraic equations. Practice translating word problems into equations quickly, since timing pressure is the biggest challenge here.
Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning section assesses your reading comprehension and critical reasoning skills. Sentence correction questions, which tested grammar in the older GMAT, have been removed. You should instead focus on identifying assumptions, evaluating arguments, and drawing inferences from short academic and business-style passages.
Data Insights
The Data Insights section includes questions on data sufficiency, multi-source reasoning, table analysis, graphics interpretation, and two-part analysis. This section blends quantitative and verbal skills, so you need comfort reading charts and tables under time pressure, alongside basic maths.

Who Can Take the GMAT Exam?
You do not need a specific educational qualification, nationality, or work experience to take the GMAT. Most test-takers are college students or working professionals applying for a master's degree.
- Age Criteria: GMAC sets the minimum age for the GMAT at 13 years, but if you are under 18, you need written parental consent. There is no upper age limit, so you can take the GMAT at any stage of your career.
- Educational Qualification: You do not need a specific degree to register for the GMAT.
- Work Experience: GMAC does not mandate prior work experience for registration. Some MBA programmes prefer candidates with 2-5 years of professional experience, but you can take the GMAT regardless of your work history.
- Nationality: Both Indian and international applicants are eligible to register for the GMAT.

How to Register for the GMAT Exam?
Here is a step-by-step guide you can follow to register for the GMAT exam:
- Step 1: Create a GMAC Account: Visit mba.com and sign up with your basic personal details (name, date of birth, citizenship)to create an account.
- Step 2: Choose Your Exam Mode: Select either a test centre near you or the online, remote-proctored format. Pick a date and time slot based on availability.
- Step 3: Pay and Confirm: Review your appointment details and complete payment by card or net banking. You will receive a confirmation email with your exam details and GMAT test instructions.
A common mistake you should avoid is entering your name differently from how it appears on your passport, since this mismatch can get you turned away at the test centre. Double-check your ID details before you submit the form.
GMAT Exam Dates 2026
You can book a GMAT exam date throughout the year, since GMAC runs the test continuously rather than on set days. GMAT exam dates in India are available at test centres in major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Jaipur, along with the online option, which you can schedule any day of the week from home.
You should book your GMAT exam date 2026 at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance if you want a specific test centre slot, since demand peaks during application season between July and October. If you are flexible on location, choosing online GMAT exam dates gives you far more day-to-day availability than a fixed test centre.
For the full city-wise calendar, check the GMAT exam dates page.
GMAT Exam Attempts and Retake Policy
You can retake the GMAT exam up to 5 times within a rolling 12-month period, and a maximum of 8 times in your lifetime. GMAC removed the earlier 8-attempt lifetime cap, so you can now retake the GMAT as many times as you need.
- If your score is cancelled due to a testing issue or other policy violation, that exam session will still count towards the rolling 12-month period.
- You must wait at least 5 years before retaking the GMAT if you previously achieved a perfect Total Score of 805.
GMAT Scoring & Score Validity
GMAT scores range between 205 and 805, with each of the three sections scored separately on a 60 to 90 scale in 1-point increments. GMAC combines these section scores into a total score in 10-point increments.
- Unofficial scores are available immediately after the test. Official score reports are delivered within 3 to 5 days.
- The GMAT percentile rank shows how a candidate performed relative to all other test-takers in the same period, which admissions committees use for comparative evaluation.
- GMAT scores are valid for 5 years from the test date, allowing candidates to apply across multiple admission cycles.
- A competitive GMAT score depends on the target program. A 650 may be sufficient for mid-ranked programs, while top business schools like Stanford GSB and Wharton typically admit candidates with scores above 720.
What is a Good GMAT Score?
A good GMAT score depends on the program you are applying to. A 650+ score puts you in a reasonably strong position for many established business schools, while elite programmes like Harvard or Stanford typically see average scores above 700.
Your GMAT score is part of a broader application, so a strong GMAT score cannot fully offset weak essays or recommendations, but it does strengthen your application.

How to Prepare for the GMAT Exam 2026?
The GMAT preparation plan depends on your current proficiency, your target score, and how much time you have before your application deadline.
- Understand the GMAT exam pattern: Start with a diagnostic test to find your strong and weak areas before you build a study schedule.
- Follow a structured study plan: Create a study plan that allocates more hours to your weaker section, while still practising all three sections weekly to keep your skills balanced.
- Take regular mock tests: Take full-length mock tests every one to two weeks once you have covered the syllabus, since these build your exam stamina and timing instincts.
You can prepare through self-study using official GMAC materials, or through structured coaching if you need guided feedback.
Best Books for GMAT Preparation
The best book for GMAT preparation depends on your current skill level and practice needs. Start with GMAC's official materials, since they reflect the real test most closely, and use third-party books to reinforce your understanding of concepts once you have identified specific gaps.
