Given your IELTS? Nice! But you are not done yet!

The real work begins with your Test Report Form (TRF). This is the form that carries your IELTS scores, and this is the official document for the IELTS scorecard that the universities abroad will receive. Without it, no university is going to look at your application!

So yes, your journey is just beginning!

Your TRF has a lot of detail that is integral to your university application! From how long it is valid, to how many institutions you get to send it to for free, and what it will cost you if you need more copies, there is a lot of detail that you simply cannot miss.

This guide has everything you need to know about your TRF.

    Key Highlights:

    • Your TRF is valid for 2 years and contains detailed scores plus candidate information.
    • In India, you get 1 free TRF copy delivered and can send scores to 5 universities free.
    • Scores can be sent via post or electronically, with electronic delivery being faster and cheaper.
    • Additional TRFs cost ₹250 per university (electronic) or ₹1500 per university (courier).
    • eTRFs can be downloaded online via the IDP IELTS portal.

What is the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)?

The term TRF (Test Report Form) must be familiar to you. If not, don't worry! Your official IELTS result record, which verifies your score on paper, is this Test Report Form. Each candidate is issued only one IELTS TRF.

Your IELTS TRF report contains the following details:

    • Test Type: Academic or General Training
    • Centre Number
    • Date of Test
    • Candidate Number
    • Candidate Details, such as Family Name, First Name, and Candidate ID
    • Personal Details such as Date of Birth, Gender, Scheme Code, Country, and First Language
    • Test Results: TRF will contain your individual IELTS scores on the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections, along with your Overall Band Score and the corresponding CEFR Level.
    • IELTS TRF Number: Mentioned at the bottom right corner

The validity of TRF is two years from the date of the result, which is often shown on the report. For instance, your TRF report is valid and used until August 1st, 2027, if you obtain the results on August 1st, 2025. If you need to repeat the IELTS exam for any associated documentation beyond this time, you will have to do so.

Furthermore, you will probably need to pick up your TRF report in person or have it sent to you. In India, you can submit your test results to 5 institutions within a month of the exam date, and you will receive a free hard copy of your Test Report Form (TRF) at your registered address. These scores will be sent to the universities by courier, normal mail, email, or international postage.

Following that, submitting any Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) electronically would cost you an administrative fee of INR 250 per university.

How to send the IELTS TRF Scorecard to universities?

As mentioned, you can send TRF to the five selected universities via. two methods- either by post or electronically.

Most universities require an original copy of your IELTS TRF report; however, it is advisable to confirm each university's preferred method of receiving IELTS scores, as some may accept electronic submissions, potentially saving time and costs.

Send your IELTS score to universities by post

To send your IELTS scores to universities by post, you'll need to request Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs) to be mailed directly to the institutions. To request this service, enter the relevant university addresses on your portal while registering for IELTS. You can send up to five additional copies of your TRF directly to the universities you are applying to at no cost.

The processing times for ATRF requests are typically 7 to 10 working days from the date of payment; hence, it is advisable to plan accordingly.

Send your IELTS score to universities electronically

To send your IELTS scores to universities electronically, you must go to the portal and look for the section designated for score submissions. Add the information for your selected universities and choose the option for electronic delivery. After entering the required details, submit your request. IELTS will then transmit your electronic Test Report Form (eTRF) directly to the universities you've specified.

    Easy!

If you possess an eTRF, you can also email it directly to the universities to which you are applying. There is no limit on how frequently you can do this as long as your eTRF is dated within the last two years.

In some cases, a university may accept a scanned version of your (paper) Test Report Form. If so, you can scan the document and submit it as a PDF.

When do we need Additional TRFs (ATRF)?

When you register for the IELTS, you can select up to five universities to send your scores electronically and free of charge. If you need to send them to more institutions, you must request an Additional Test Report Form (ATRF).

Each extra electronic ATRF costs ₹250 per university and should be applied after a day. IDP now accepts only online applications for ATRFs, so you can no longer submit requests in person. To apply, simply log in to your IELTS Candidate Portal, select the “Add TRF” option, and enter the details of the university you want to send your scores to.

How Long Does It Take To Send IELTS Scores To Universities?

Sending IELTS results online to colleges typically takes around 5 business days, whereas delivering a hard copy scorecard to universities may take between 5 to 10 business days. Always use a TRF (Test Report Form) to send your scores to universities, which is a copy of your IELTS result or scorecard. You can receive your TRF within 13 days of the IELTS exam date.

Just in case you wish to pick up your TRF from your nearest IDP IELTS office after the results are released, you are required to bring your identity proof that was used throughout the registration process.
