TOEFL Score and Duolingo English Test Comparison

The TOEFL is one of the most widely accepted English proficiency exams worldwide. Recognised by universities, employers, and immigration authorities, TOEFL assesses English skills in four key areas: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It is commonly used for academic and professional purposes.

TOEFL Score Interpretation

TOEFL iBT scores range from 0 to 120, with each section scored out of 30 points. The total score is the sum of all four section scores, providing a comprehensive evaluation of a test-taker's English proficiency.

Duolingo Test Score Interpretation

As you may notice, the formats of the tests are rather identical for Duolingo, IELTS, and TOEFL, but each has a distinct feature that makes it favourable to different candidates. Now, speaking of the Duolingo score.

The score range given for the Duolingo examination is from 10 to 160. The DET report will show you a general score with subscores for each skill. The subscores will show how you performed but the total score shows the mastery level of the subject.

Duolingo aims to measure your ability and effectiveness as a communicator in the given four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking and so when you obtain a score, it means how ready you are in using English socially and academically.

Here's a quick interpretation of what your score means if you fall in the given range:

Score

Description

10 – 55

Can understand basic English words and phrases, like greetings or simple directions (e.g., "Hello," "Where is the bathroom?"). Can communicate in familiar situations, such as ordering food or asking for help.

60 – 85

Can understand everyday topics of school or work and describe plans, opinions, or experiences, though sometimes with hesitation. For example, explaining your goals or talking about a recent trip.

90 – 115

Can communicate effectively on familiar or unfamiliar topics, understand key ideas in both concrete and abstract writing, and interact easily with fluent speakers. For example, you can comfortably discuss any topic or, understand articles/essays on complex subjects and engage in conversations with native speakers without much difficulty.

120 – 160

You can understand complex language, both written and spoken, including in specialized fields (like technical or academic topics). You also understand idiomatic expressions and use English effectively in social, academic, and professional situations, whether it’s having a conversation, participating in a class forum, or writing emails.

How much is considered a good Duolingo English Test score?

A score above 120 is considered strong and demonstrates advanced English proficiency. However, a good Duolingo English Test score depends on your academic or professional goals. Scores between 90 and 119 are typically sufficient for academic admissions, indicating a competent level of English, while scores below 90 may suggest the need for additional language support or further preparation to meet the required standards.
