What is the dMAT General Academic Module?
The dMAT General Academic Module is the second module of the dMAT exam and is taken in the same sitting as the Core Module. It presents short academic inputs such as a passage, table, or formula, followed by single-choice questions that test how well you apply reasoning to the given information. The module follows the same format for all test-takers, regardless of their specific bachelor’s degree or intended Master’s major.
The questions can use information from broad academic areas such as basic science concepts, social science research methods, economics and mathematics. Please note that you are not expected to have deep specialised knowledge in these areas. The focus is on applying logic to the information provided in the question, rather than recalling subject-specific facts.
Who is Required to take the dMAT General Academic Module?
The dMAT General Academic Module is mandatory for APS Indian applicants with bachelor’s degrees in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business, or management. Applicants from other academic backgrounds (arts, pure sciences, medicine and more) do not currently need to take this module.

General Academic Module Question Types
The dMAT General Academic Module uses an input-based format, so every question is linked to a passage, table, figure or formula rather than appearing as a standalone question.
Data Interpretation
- Read tables and figures: Identify the numbers, trends and relationships that are relevant to the question instead of trying to analyse every value in the input.
- Work with percentages and ratios: Practise calculating percentage changes, proportions and ratios mentally, as these may be needed to compare different data points.
- Compare information: Check differences, increases, decreases and relationships between values before selecting an answer. Pay attention to the units and reference values used in the input.
Rates and Averages
- Identify the quantities involved: Before calculating, determine what is being measured, such as speed, time, distance, output or quantity, and identify the values provided for each.
- Use the given totals: For average or rate questions, work from the relevant total values and the number of items or time involved rather than applying a shortcut without checking what the question asks.
- Keep track of units: Make sure the units match before comparing or calculating values. A change in units can affect the final answer even when the calculation itself is correct.
Inference-Based Questions
- Use only the given information: Choose an answer that follows logically from the text, table, figure, or formula. Do not add outside knowledge or assumptions to fill gaps in the information.
- Separate fact from possibility: A statement may sound reasonable without being proven by the input. Select the option that is necessarily supported by the information provided.
- Check each option against the input: If an answer requires an assumption that is not stated or supported, eliminate it. Focus on what the information actually allows you to conclude.
How to Solve General Academic Module Questions?
The General Academic Module presents unfamiliar academic information, so practise understanding the question, identifying the relevant evidence, and applying logic before choosing an answer.
Here are dMAT General Academic Module tips to make practice more effective and avoid common errors on test day:
- Understand what the question is asking: Before working through the full input, identify whether you need to find a value, compare information, interpret a relationship, or draw a conclusion. This helps you focus on the parts of the text, table, figure or formula that are relevant to the question.
- Work with different types of inputs: Alternate between short academic texts, tables, figures and formula-based questions during practice. This prepares you to work with unfamiliar information instead of becoming comfortable with only one question format.
- Use only the information provided: Base your answer on the facts, values and relationships given in the input. Do not rely on outside knowledge, even when a statement seems factually correct. For inference questions, select the conclusion that is supported by the given information rather than one that is simply possible.
- Learn from incorrect options: When reviewing practice questions, do not stop at identifying the correct answer. Check why each incorrect option fails, such as by contradicting the input, using an unsupported assumption or misinterpreting a relationship. This can help you recognise similar distractors during the test.
- Add timed practice after building accuracy: Start with untimed sets so you can focus on understanding the input and solving correctly. Once your accuracy is consistent, practise complete input sets under the 90-minute module limit and work on maintaining a steady pace across different question types.

Data Interpretation
Question 1: A company's quarterly revenue (in lakhs) is: Q1 - 45, Q2 - 54, Q3 - 60, Q4 - 66. By what percentage did revenue increase from Q1 to Q4?
(a) 40%
(b) 42%
(c) 46.7%
(d) 50%
Answer: (c) 46.7%.
Subtract the Q1 revenue from the Q4 revenue to find the increase. Divide the increase by the Q1 value and multiply by 100 to calculate the percentage change. Here, (66 - 45) ÷ 45 × 100 = 46.7%. Check whether the question asks for a percentage change or only the difference in value.
Question 2: A figure shows papers published by four departments in a year: Physics - 32, Chemistry - 28, Biology - 45, Mathematics - 25. Which department's output is closest to double the Mathematics department's output?
(a) Physics
(b) Chemistry
(c) Biology
(d) None of these
Answer: (c) Biology
First, calculate double the Mathematics figure: 25 × 2 = 50. Then compare 50 with the output of each department. Biology, with 45 papers, is closest to 50, while Physics and Chemistry have lower figures.
Rates and Averages
Question 1: A cyclist covers 15 km in 25 minutes at a constant speed. At the same speed, how long will she take to cover 60 km?
(a) 1 hr 20 min
(b) 1 hr 40 min
(c) 2 hr
(d) 2 hr 15 min
Answer: (b) 1 hr 40 min.
First calculate the speed: 15 km ÷ 25 min = 0.6 km/min. Then calculate the time needed for 60 km: 60 ÷ 0.6 = 100 minutes, which is 1 hour 40 minutes. Keeping the speed constant helps you relate the two distances correctly.
Question 2: A factory records daily output over 5 days: 120, 135, 128, 142, and 130 units. What is the average daily output?
(a) 128
(b) 130
(c) 131
(d) 133
Answer: (c) 131
Add the output for all five days to get the total: 120 + 135 + 128 + 142 + 130 = 655 units. Divide the total by 5 days: 655 ÷ 5 = 131 units. Check the number of values before dividing, as using the wrong number of days will give an incorrect average.
Inference-Based
Question 1: A survey of 500 college students found that 65% reported using public transport at least three times a week. Among those who used public transport regularly, 40% also owned a bicycle. Students who did not use public transport regularly were not asked about bicycle ownership.
Which conclusion is best supported by the passage?
(a) Most students who own a bicycle use public transport regularly.
(b) At least some regular public transport users also own a bicycle.
(c) Students who do not use public transport never own bicycles.
(d) Bicycle ownership is more common than public transport use among students.
Answer: (b)
The passage states that 40% of regular public transport users also owned a bicycle, which shows that some students in this group owned bicycles. The other options require information that the passage does not provide. In particular, students who did not regularly use public transport were not asked about bicycle ownership, so no conclusion can be drawn about that group.
Question 2: The intensity of sound (I) from a source relates to distance (d) by the formula I = k/d², where k is a constant. If the distance from the source is doubled, what happens to the intensity?
(a) It doubles
(b) It halves
(c) It becomes one-fourth
(d) It remains the same
Answer: (c)
It becomes one-fourth. If the distance is doubled, replace d with 2d in the formula: I = k/(2d)² = k/4d². Therefore, the new intensity is one-fourth of the original intensity. The key is to apply the square to the entire doubled distance, not just to the original distance.
