dMAT Eligibility Criteria 2026: Requirements & Qualifications

The dMAT is an eligibility requirement for certain Indian students applying for Master's programmes in Germany through APS India. It applies to students targeting the Summer Semester 2027 or later whose Bachelor's degree falls under Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or Management.

dMAT Eligibility Criteria (2026-27)

The dMAT eligibility criteria cover nationality, programme level, intended intake, undergraduate degree field, and degree recognition.

Applicant Nationality

• APS India applicants: The dMAT requirement currently applies to Master's applicants going through the APS India documentation and verification process.

Programme Level (Master's Only)

• Master's programmes: The dMAT applies only to Master's-level applicants in Germany, whether the target university is public or private. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are not covered, even if their undergraduate degree falls within an affected field.
• Programme structure: The requirement applies regardless of whether a student is applying for a standard consecutive Master's or a specialised Master's. It is based on the programme level, not the specific course title.

Target Intake - Summer 2027 Onward

• Summer Semester 2027 onwards: The dMAT requirement applies to Master's applicants targeting the Summer Semester 2027 or a coming intake, unless a transitional exemption applies.
• Winter Semester 2026/27 and earlier: Applications for intakes before Summer 2027 are not affected by the dMAT requirement, even if the applicant's degree falls within an affected field.

Degree Field

• Engineering: All engineering disciplines are covered, including IT-related fields such as Computer Science Engineering and Electronics Engineering.
• Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or Economics: Any undergraduate degree in these fields qualifies, including specialised degrees such as B.Com (Honours) and BAF.
• Business or Management: BBA, BMS, and equivalent undergraduate management degrees are included.
• Other degree fields: Standalone basic science degrees, such as B.Sc. Physics or B.Sc. Chemistry, and general arts degrees are not affected because the mandate is limited to the specified field categories.

Interdisciplinary or Mixed Degrees

• Mixed-field degrees: Degrees such as Business Analytics, Data Science, Fintech, Engineering Management, and Industrial Engineering fall under the intersection of the mandated fields. Eligibility is therefore not automatic, and one should verify their status against APS India's official affected-fields list.
• Official classification: Eligibility depends on how APS India formally classifies a specific Bachelor's programme, not on any assessment. As a result, applicants with similarly named degrees from different universities could have different eligibility outcomes.

Degree Recognition (Anabin Check)

• Separate recognition requirement: Meeting the dMAT eligibility criteria does not confirm that a student’s university or degree is formally recognised for admission purposes in Germany.
• Check anabin separately: Verify the higher education institution's status in the anabin database before registering for the dMAT and submitting APS documents. Degree and institution recognition are assessed separately from dMAT eligibility.

Who is Exempt from the dMAT?

Certain Indian graduates are exempted from the dMAT requirement based on their APS application status, programme type, or Bachelor's degree field.

Below are the details on dMAT exemption categories:

• Early APS registration: Applicants who completed their online APS registration before 29 June 2026 are exempt for that specific APS application. A new APS application started after this date follows the current dMAT requirement.
• Early document submission: Applicants who shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026 are exempt, even if their online registration took place around the same time. Either early registration or early document submission is sufficient for this exemption.
• Already-certified applicants: Applicants who completed the APS procedure and received an APS certificate for that application are exempt. A new APS application for a different intake is assessed under the current dMAT rules.
• Bachelor's programme applicants: Applicants applying for a Bachelor's degree in Germany do not need the dMAT, regardless of their intended field of study.
• PhD applicants: Applicants applying for a PhD programme do not need the dMAT, as the requirement applies to Master's-level APS documentation.
• Exchange and partnership programme applicants: Applicants applying through an officially approved exchange programme, double-degree programme, or university partnership programme follow a separate documentation process and are exempt from the dMAT requirement.
• Non-mandated degree fields: Applicants with Bachelor's degrees outside Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, and Management are not covered by the dMAT requirement. This includes standalone basic science and general arts degrees.
