dMAT Subject Module 2026: Syllabus, Subjects & Exam Pattern

The dMAT exam is divided into two parts: Core Module and Subject Module. The dMAT Subject Module is the second half of the dMAT exam, and it tests how well you apply the knowledge from your bachelor's degree. Unlike the dMAT Core Module, which is the same for every applicant, the Subject Module changes depending on the master's programme you are applying to or APS documentation.

What is the dMAT Subject Module?

The dMAT Subject Module is a 90-minute, single-choice section that tests bachelor's-level subject knowledge and your ability to apply it to a typical academic problem. Each task presents an input, usually a short text, table, or formula, followed by questions with four answer options and only one correct answer. You get no scratch paper, no calculator, and no notes during this section, so mental calculation and quick reasoning matter more than memorised formulas.

Types of dMAT Subject Modules

The dMAT exam has seven subject modules. Only one of them, the General Academic Module, applies to the standard APS India certification route that most Indian applicants use. The other six are tied to specific master's programmes at two German universities and only apply if you are applying to one of those programmes.

dMAT General Academic Module

The General Academic Module is the dMAT Subject Module that every Indian applicant takes for APS verification, regardless of whether their bachelor's degree is in Engineering, Commerce, or Business. It lasts 90 minutes and includes single-choice questions, each built around a short academic input such as a text passage, table, or formula.

  • Wide range of topics: You may encounter questions from mathematics, computational sciences, natural sciences, engineering, business administration, economics, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Tests academic reasoning: You receive a typical academic problem and need to apply reasoning and analytical skills, regardless of your undergraduate degree.

dMAT Chemistry Subject Module

The Chemistry Subject Module in the dMAT exam tests bachelor’s-level chemistry knowledge and applies to applicants for the MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering at RWTH Aachen. 

  • Basic tasks: Cover foundational concepts across all five relevant fields: Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Advanced tasks: If you select Chemistry, the advanced section tests topics such as redox reactions, acid-base equilibria, and infrared spectroscopy at a level that assumes solid bachelor's-level grounding.

dMAT Physics Subject Module

The Physics Subject Module applies only to applicants for the MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering at RWTH Aachen. The basic tasks cover foundational physics alongside the other four fields, while the advanced tasks go deeper into physics as a specialisation.

  • Basic Tasks: Foundational concepts like Electric current, voltage, resistance, Ohm’s law, series and parallel circuits, electrical conductivity, and basic circuit calculations. 
  • Advanced Tasks: Advanced tasks cover applied mechanics, including oscillations, pendulum corrections, and electromagnetic circuits, as well as wave and solid-state physics topics such as diffraction and Miller indices.

dMAT Computer Science Subject Module

The Computer Science Subject Module tests core programming logic and computational thinking, and it applies to the MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering programme at RWTH Aachen.

  • Basic Tasks: Cover foundational computer science alongside Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, while advanced tasks go deeper into your chosen area.
  • Advanced Tasks: Advanced tasks lean heavily on Boolean logic and combinational circuits, including truth tables, canonical disjunctive normal form, and reading logic gate diagrams to derive a Boolean function. You will also see questions on data types and type conversion in a Java-like syntax, so revising basic programming fundamentals gives you an edge here rather than memorising any single language's full syntax.

dMAT Electrical Engineering Subject Module

The dMAT Electrical Engineering Subject Module is the fourth of the five Battery Science modules at RWTH Aachen, and it follows the identical basic-plus-advanced format used across the group. 

  • Basic tasks: Test circuit fundamentals such as Ohm's law and resistor combinations, alongside the shared foundational content in the other four fields.
  • Advanced Tasks: Series and parallel resistor networks, voltage dividers, and current dividers, often requiring you to calculate total resistance across multi-resistor circuits without a calculator.

dMAT Mechanical Engineering Subject Module

The MAT Mechanical Engineering Subject Module is the fifth module for the Battery Science programme at RWTH Aachen, with basic tasks shared across all five fields and advanced tasks specific to Mechanical Engineering. 

  • Basic Tasks: Cover polymer materials, including thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers, their response to heat and force, and the key polymerisation routes, namely polymerisation, polycondensation and polyaddition. 
  • Advanced Tasks: Includes Mathematics II, focusing on differentiability, monotonicity, global extrema and breakpoints, and the Rankine Cycle, covering its four stages, T-S diagrams, efficiency, condenser pressure and reheating. 

dMAT Data Science Subject Module

The Data Science Subject Module applies solely to applicants for the MSc Data Science programme at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Unlike the Battery Science modules, it does not follow a basic-plus-advanced split across five fields. Instead, its questions draw from three areas: Theoretical Computer Science, Applied Computer Science, and Mathematics.

  • Theoretical and Applied Computer Science: Covers programming fundamentals such as data types and type conversion, plus Boolean logic and combinational circuits, similar in style to the Computer Science module used for Battery Science.
  • Mathematics: Focuses heavily on linear algebra as applied to data science, including matrix rank, eigenvalues, and dimensionality reduction techniques such as Principal Component Analysis and Linear Discriminant Analysis.

Tip: If you are taking the Data Science Subject Module, prioritise revising matrix operations and the intuition behind dimensionality reduction, since these concepts recur across multiple question types in the official preparatory material.

How to Prepare for the dMAT Subject Module?

You can prepare for the dMAT Subject Module by revising your existing bachelor's-level knowledge under timed, no-notes conditions rather than by studying new material.

  • Practise without a calculator or notes: No calculator, scratch paper, or notes are allowed during the exam, so train yourself to work through calculations and multi-step problems mentally before test day.
  • Cover all five basic fields if you are taking a Battery Science-related module: Since basic-level questions in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are shared across all five modules, revise foundational concepts in all five fields even if your advanced section covers only one.
  • Never leave a question blank: There is no negative marking, so an educated guess costs you nothing while a blank answer guarantees no marks. Eliminate at least one option before guessing to improve your odds.
