dMAT vs GRE (2026): Key Differences, Exam Pattern & Scoring
If you have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, commerce, or business and plan to apply for an MS in Germany from the Summer Semester 2027 onwards, you may need to understand how the dMAT and GRE differ. The dMAT forms part of the APS documentation process for eligible applicants, while the GRE serves as an admission requirement that only some German universities or programmes request.
This guide explains the key differences between the dMAT and GRE, which universities may require the GRE alongside the dMAT, and how their costs compare.
Key Highlights:
- The dMAT requirement is tied to the APS process and the Summer Semester 2027 intake, while the GRE depends on the admission cycle and the individual programme’s application deadline.
- The dMAT takes around 3 hours 15 minutes, while the GRE takes 1 hour 58 minutes.
- The GRE is section-adaptive, while the dMAT uses a fixed test structure with its Core Module and General Academic Module.
- dMAT eligibility depends on the applicant’s previous degree field and APS timeline, while GRE eligibility depends primarily on the requirements of the target programme.
- A dMAT certificate remains valid indefinitely, while GRE scores remain valid for five years and the test can be retaken subject to ETS rules.

dMAT vs GRE: Key Differences
The dMAT exam and the GRE serve two different purposes in your German master’s application. The dMAT supports your APS documentation process, while the GRE meets a university’s admission requirement where the programme asks for it.

What is the dMAT Exam?
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardised aptitude test that APS India added to its documentation process on 29 June 2026 for selected students applying for Master’s in Germany. It is developed and centrally evaluated by g.a.s.t., the same body behind TestDaF and TestAS, and its format was built in cooperation with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel.
- Affected fields: The dMAT applies to Master's applicants whose previous degree is in engineering, commerce/accounting/finance/economics, or business/management. It does not apply to Bachelor's, PhD, or exchange programme applicants.
- Test structure: The dMAT has a duration of around 3 hours 15 minutes and has two sections. The Core Module (Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, and Latin Squares) tests general reasoning, and the General Academic Module tests how you apply subject knowledge to an unfamiliar academic problem.
- First test date: Registration opened on 29 June 2026, with a registration deadline of 15 September 2026, a test date of 26 September 2026, and results available from 12 October 2026.
- Applies from: The dMAT requirement is intended for the Summer Semester 2027 Master intake and later intakes, since the first certificates are not issued until 12 October 2026.
You are exempt if you completed your APS online registration or shipped your APS documents before 29 June 2026, or if you already hold an APS certificate for a completed application. There is no pass or fail cut-off, and a low dMAT score does not automatically block your APS certificate.
What is the GRE Test?
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a globally recognised admissions test administered by ETS, used by some German university programmes as one part of their admission process, independent of your APS file. Unlike the dMAT, it does not go through APS at all.
- Test structure: The GRE General Test runs for 1 hour 58 minutes and is section-adaptive, meaning your performance on the first Verbal and Quant sections determines the difficulty of the second. It includes Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and one Analytical Writing task.
- Score reporting: Your GRE score chart goes directly to the universities you nominate on test day, or later through an Additional Score Report, and never passes through APS India.
- Who asks for it: Only specific programmes at specific universities require it. Most German Master's programmes, particularly outside engineering and management, do not ask for a GRE score.
- Retake rules: You can retake the GRE once every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12-month period.
Check the admissions page of each programme on your shortlist individually. A university that skips the GRE for one department can still require it for another.

Which German Universities Require GRE After the dMAT Exam?
The dMAT rollout has not affected any university's existing GRE requirement, since the two fall in entirely separate parts of your application. RWTH Aachen and Georg-August University Göttingen use the dMAT itself, not the GRE, as a direct admission input for two specific programmes: RWTH's M.Sc. in Battery Science and Technology in Engineering, and Göttingen's M.Sc. in Applied Data Science. Here are universities that require a GRE score for admission irrespective of the dMAT exam.
- TUM: GRE (or GATE as an alternative) is required for all Master's programmes within the Informatics profile and for the M.Sc. in Data Engineering and Analytics, specifically for applicants who completed their previous degree in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, or Iran. TUM's minimum requirement is a Quantitative Reasoning score of 164 and an Analytical Writing score of 4.0.
- RWTH Aachen: The M.Sc. in Computer Science requires a GRE General Test result above the 75th percentile in Quantitative Reasoning, above the 15th percentile in Verbal Reasoning, and at least 3.5 in Analytical Writing. EU/EEA citizens and Bildungsinländer are exempt from this requirement.
- KIT: The M.Sc. in Computer Science requires a GRE General Test with Verbal Reasoning of at least 151, Quantitative Reasoning of at least 164, and Analytical Writing of at least 4, or a GATE score in Computer Science and Information Technology or Data Science and Artificial Intelligence as an alternative.
dMAT vs GRE: Which One is Important for Studying in Germany?
You do not choose between the dMAT and the GRE the way you would choose between IELTS and TOEFL. dMAT is part of your APS documentation, and GRE is a test used for university admission.
- Check the dMAT criteria first. If your bachelor's field falls in engineering, commerce, or business, and your APS process starts on or after 29 June 2026 for a Summer 2027 or later intake, the dMAT applies to you regardless of which university you target.
- Check each shortlisted programme for a GRE requirement. Look at the programme's own admissions page, not a university's general homepage, since requirements vary by department within the same university.
- Prepare for the two tests separately. The dMAT Core Module is a short, visual, no-notes test of figure sequences and logic grids, while the GRE covers verbal and quantitative reasoning with an essay component. Preparation for one does little to help you with the other.
