Understanding the dMAT Exam Structure 2026

The dMAT exam is divided into two parts: the Core Module and the Subject Module. Both the Core Module and the General Academic Subject Module test reasoning speed and application of Bachelor’s level fundamentals rather than a memorised syllabus.

The test is computer-based, conducted in English, and uses single-choice questions for all sections. No notes, scratch paper, or calculators are allowed at any time during the exam. The table below provides a quick overview of the dMAT exam pattern.

Free dMAT Preparation Material

There is no fixed syllabus for the dMAT exam. However, g.a.s.t. has published free Preparatory Materials for each dMAT subject module that cover task instructions along with sample questions and answer keys. These PDFs are among the closest available resources to an official dMAT sample paper.

The dMAT website also provides five official instructional videos to help students prepare for the exam. Watch them before attempting practice questions, as they explain the digital test format, walk you through each Core Module subtest, and demonstrate the General Academic Module interface.

Here are the official instructional videos for dMAT exam preparation:

Expert Insight: g.a.s.t. also conducts TestAS, an aptitude test for undergraduate applicants to Germany, and its Digital Test uses the same Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, and Latin Squares questions as the dMAT Core Module. Using Digital TestAS preparation materials therefore gives you additional practice with these similar task types.

dMAT Sample Questions Papers

Yocket Prep has built free dMAT sample papers for both the dMAT Core & General Academic modules, each with 10 timed practice questions and an answer key.

These free dMAT sample papers mirror the exact question format of the dMAT exam, so you get a realistic sense of the pace you will need to maintain on test day rather than generic reasoning questions.

Free dMAT Mock Tests

Free dMAT mock tests let you practise the exam format under timed conditions. Use them to understand the question types, practise time management for exam day, and identify areas that need more preparation.

  1. Leap Scholar: Leap Scholar offers a free full-length dMAT mock test (2 hours 45 minutes) and an express version where the General Academic module is shortened to 45 minutes.
  2. PREPDMAT: PREPDMAT offers a free, timed mock test to help you assess your current preparation level before you start studying.
  3. Jamboree: Jamboree offers a free dMAT Diagnostic test for the Core Module that includes all three subtests.

dMAT Preparation Books

There is no official dMAT preparation book available since the exam is ‌new. And since the dMAT exam does not test recalled content from your degree, a traditional test-prep book would not help you the way it does for an exam like the GRE or GMAT. General logical and numerical reasoning books written for aptitude tests such as CAT or GMAT help you build the underlying skills for Mathematical Equations and pattern recognition, though none of them map to the dMAT's specific rule sets.

Additional Prep Resources for dMAT exam

Once you finish the official dMAT resources, you can turn to a few supplementary resources for additional practice.

  • TestAS practice material: TestAS sample papers and reference materials offer the strongest structural overlap since both share the Core Module task types. You can use TestAS questions to build familiarity with these formats, but remember that TestAS remains a separate exam and its material cannot replace dMAT-specific preparation.
  • GRE and GMAT resources: GRE/GMAT sample questions from the quantitative reasoning section can help you improve pattern recognition, logical deduction, and speed under time pressure for the dMAT Core Module. However, these exams use different question formats, so use their practice sets as additional reasoning drills rather than as substitutes for dMAT mock tests.
  • Independent dMAT resources: Several exam prep portals offer dMAT mock tests and question banks, giving you opportunities for additional practice. Quality varies between providers, so compare their questions with the official g.a.s.t. format before using them for exam prep.

How to Use the Free dMAT Preparation Material?

Use the free preparation material strategically to understand the rules, build speed, and practice under test-day conditions.

  • Read the task instructions before attempting questions: The official PDF explains the Figure Sequences movement rules and Mathematical Equations constraints. The actual exam provides only brief reminders, so understand these rules before you practice.
  • Practice without notes from day one: You cannot use a calculator, rough paper, or notes during the dMAT. Practice solving Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares mentally from your first session, so you become comfortable with the actual test conditions.
  • Time every practice set: Aim for ‌75 seconds per question across the three Core Module subtests. Use a timer during every practice session instead of solving questions at your own pace.
  • Do not leave questions blank: The dMAT does not have negative marking, so you can make an educated guess after eliminating one or more options. A blank answer, however, gives you no chance of scoring.
  • Revise your degree fundamentals for application: For the General Academic Module, focus on applying concepts to unfamiliar scenarios rather than ‌memorising facts or rereading your undergraduate textbooks. Practice using the information provided in each question to reach the answer.

dMAT Preparation Timeline

Build your dMAT preparation timeline in stages so you first understand the test, then improve your speed and finish with exam-style practice.

  • 3 weeks before the exam: Start with the official dMAT information and preparation material. Familiarise yourself with the Core Module and General Academic Module, and attempt the available questions without focusing heavily on speed.
  • 2 weeks before the exam: Practise individual question types under their actual time limits. Track which formats take you the longest and repeat those exercises until you can solve them more consistently.
  • 1 week before the exam: Combine different question types and introduce full timed sessions. Use supplementary dMAT practice only after you have worked through the official material.
  • Final few days: Take a limited number of full-length mocks in exam conditions. Review your mistakes, revisit recurring problem areas, and avoid spending your final days trying to learn entirely new question types.

From the Desk of Yocket

The dMAT is a new exam, so building genuine speed and accuracy on its task types matters more than accumulating a large volume of free practice material. Focus on mastering each Core Module format under its real time limit, then spend concentrated time on the General Academic Module, where applying information from unfamiliar academic material under pressure is the actual skill being tested.

Yocket Prep helps you prepare for the dMAT exam with targeted study resources and practice questions designed to build your speed and accuracy before the exam. A consistent study schedule will help you approach each section with greater confidence.
